8 Steps to Repair a Fiberglass Shower Floor

In your bathroom, fiberglass shower floors are very durable and can last years with very little maintenance; however, if your fiberglass shower floor is struck hard enough by a hard object, it will crack. But it doesn’t matter, because you can easily repair a cracked or fractured fiberglass shower floor by using fiberglass filler.

Step 1 - Clean the Cracked Surface

Clean the fractured surface with a damp cloth dabbed in acetone. Doing so will remove contaminants that will hamper your repair and prepare your fiberglass floor for the next step.

Step 2 - Remove the Damaged Fiberglass

With a grinding cone attached to a dye grinder, grind the damaged fiberglass. Do not grind through the fiberglass floor. Your aim is to remove the cracked fiberglass only. At this time you should be wearing your protective glasses and protective mask.

Step 3 - Clean the Working Area

Clean the area with clean rag dabbed in acetone. Allow the acetone to completely dry before proceeding to the next step.

Step 4 - Prepare the Fiberglass Filler

With rubber gloves on, prepare enough fiberglass filler for your repair project. Gently pour the fiberglass catalyst into the fiberglass and mix thoroughly until the fiberglass filler is consistent in color.

Step 5 - Apply the Fiberglass Filler

Use a putty knife to fill the damaged area of your fiberglass floor with the filler. Ensure that the fiberglass filler is level with the floor surface of your shower. Allow the fiberglass filler to dry overnight.

Step 6 - Use Sandpaper

Once the fiberglass filler is completely dry, use fine grit sandpaper to smooth the surface. Remove debris and fiberglass dust with a vacuum cleaner. Apply acetone using a clean rag on the newly patched areas again. Allow the acetone to completely dry before proceeding to the next step.

Step 7 - Apply Gel Coat

Prepare the mixture of gel coat and toner in a small bucket. Add catalyst and stir the solution thoroughly until it is uniform in color. Use a felt roller to apply the gel coat on the areas where you applied the fiberglass fillers. Allow the gel coat to harden. Smooth the area with fine grit sand paper. Rinse the area with water to remove dusts and debris.

Step 8 - Finishing Touches

With a clean rag, apply a single coat of car polish on the working area. Allow the car polish to completely dry before buffing the area with an electric buffer. You have just learned how to repair your damaged fiberglass shower floor.
